Your Langley podiatrist explains why diabetic patients need to take their foot health seriously.

Many people with diabetes experience other health problem and complications, particularly foot problems. However, there are certain things you can do to protect your feet. Find out why diabetic foot care is so important and certain things your Langley podiatrist recommends that you do to keep your feet problem-free.

Why you should examine your feet

While it might seem a bit odd to inspect your feet every day your Langley podiatrist cannot emphasise enough the importance of these self-examinations. Those with diabetes are at an increased risk for developing foot complications and the biggest problems can start with just the smallest blister. In fact, diabetic foot complications make up about 20 to 25 percent of all diabetic hospitalizations. Prevent this from happening to you by following these simple foot care rules:

  • Perform thorough self-exams every day. If you can’t see all areas of your feet, then have a friend or family member help you.
  • Keep toenails trimmed straight across rather than curved.
  • Wash your feet every day. Be sure to also dry your feet thoroughly, including in between the toes.
  • Use callus pads or other podiatric bandages to reduce irritation and friction on blisters, corns and calluses.
  • Wear shoes that offer your feet and ankles stability and have a roomy toe box, so your toes aren’t cramped.
  • Never go barefoot, even when inside. Always wear shoes and socks to protect your feet from injury.
  • See your Langley podiatrist right away if you notice any changes o your foot or new sores, blisters, calluses, etc.

If you notice any changes to your feet and you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, then act fast. Even the most minor problems can turn serious before you know it. Schedule an appointment today with your Langley podiatrist at Aurora Foot & Ankle Center and protect the health of your feet.
